Chalk figures

This is an amazing historical site not far from the stonehenge, although it is completely unrelated to the stonehenge. It is thought that the first time this horse was created, it was much smaller and more primitive-looking. This would have been first put on the hill to commemorate King Alfreds conquering the Danes in 878 a.d. just below this hill. It was (for sure) made to look similar to its modern form in the 18th century and was modified last about 120 years ago. Apparently there are many figures like this including the cerne abbas which can be traced back to the 17th century. The white horse:
