Stonehenge

Many of you may have heard of the infamous stone circle called the stonehenge. This is one of the things I most looked forward to seeing while here in England. Well, we actually went to see it and it was as impressive as you might have expected.

The origin of the monument is not perfectly understood and the purpose and method of construction are still mysteries. What the archaeologists do understand is that there were some supposed ritualistic structures within the site built around 8000 b.c. The first stage actually related to the stonehenge itself was a ditch built in the form of a chalk circle with two entrances on opposite ends. The builders deposited tools, bones and animal remians into this ditch. This was around 3100 b.c.

The impressive stage was around 2500 b.c when some wood structures were abandoned in favor of stones. What is amazing is that the stones were transported from so far away. Some of the stones weigh between four and six tons and could have been brought from up to 150 miles away. Again, nobody knows for certain the purpose of the stonehenge. Most theories tie it to religious rites. for more details, go to the wikipedia site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge .
